Description

ABSTRACT

Driver drowsiness causes many road accidents worldwide. These incidents lead to numerous fatalities and injuries each year. This project designs a low-cost Anti-Sleep Alarm System for Driver Safety. It uses an Arduino Uno microcontroller as its core.

The system detects drowsiness by analyzing eye blink patterns. An IR sensor continuously monitors the driver’s eyelid activity. Consequently, if it detects prolonged eye closure, it triggers an immediate alert. This alert includes a loud buzzer and a bright red LED.

Furthermore, for enhanced safety, a 5V relay module can simulate a vehicle ignition cut-off. Ultimately, this prototype provides a practical and effective solution for preventing fatigue-related accidents.


INTRODUCTION

Driver fatigue remains a leading cause of road accidents worldwide, consequently contributing to significant fatalities and injuries each year. To address this critical safety challenge, we present an innovative Anti-Sleep Alarm System built around Arduino Nano technology. Specifically, this advanced system continuously monitors driver alertness through an IR sensor-based eye blink monitor that precisely tracks blink patterns and eye closure duration in real-time.

Moreover, the system’s core intelligence lies in its sophisticated algorithm that analyzes eye movements to detect early signs of drowsiness, including prolonged eye closure and abnormal blink frequency. When fatigue thresholds are exceeded, the system immediately triggers a multi-stage safety response: for instance, an audible buzzer alarm provides immediate auditory warning, while a bright red LED delivers visual alert, and the integrated 5V relay module can interface with vehicle systems for enhanced safety measures.

Furthermore, engineered with precision on a custom PCB board, the system offers flexible power options through a 9V battery for portability as well as a 9V SMPS for stationary testing. Additionally, components such as BO motors with wheels demonstrate the system’s capability for integrated vehicle control. Ultimately, this comprehensive driver safety solution represents a significant step forward in accident prevention technology, thereby providing reliable drowsiness detection to ensure safer journeys for all road users.

AIM

This project aims to design a cost-effective anti-sleep alarm for drivers. Its primary goal is to enhance road safety by preventing accidents caused by drowsiness.

The system specifically seeks to monitor the driver’s alertness in real-time. It uses a non-intrusive eye blink sensor to track fatigue signs. For instance, it analyzes changes in blink rate and prolonged eye closure.

When drowsiness is detected, the system triggers a multi-stage alert. First, a loud buzzer creates an audible warning. Simultaneously, a bright red LED provides a strong visual cue. Furthermore, a safety relay can disable the vehicle’s ignition, forcing the driver to stop.

Additionally, the project focuses on accessibility. It uses affordable components like the Arduino Nano. Consequently, this makes the technology a practical solution for a wide audience. Ultimately, this system empowers drivers to make safer decisions on long journeys.
